You were easy to date.
You were flexible about plans. You were understanding when he went quiet for two days. You were chill, supportive and low-maintenance.
And somehow, you still ended up with a man who couldn't show up for you.
Here's the hard truth, said gently: being easy to date isn't the same as being chosen well. When you perform the "easy" version of yourself, you attract men who like the performance. You don't attract men who fit the real you.
That's where the Sword comes in.
What people-pleasing in dating actually looks like
People-pleasing rarely looks dramatic. It usually looks like being nice. For example:
- Saying "no worries!" when it's absolutely a worry.
- Agreeing to plans you don't want, so you don't seem difficult.
- Answering his texts within minutes, every time.
- Explaining his behavior to your friends before they can judge it.
- Over-giving in the relationship (the planning, the emotional labor, the patience) so he stays.
- Liking him more for choosing you than for who he actually is.
If you read that list and felt a little called out, you're in good company. Most of the women I work with are smart, capable and successful. They're just very good at making other people comfortable.
Why being "easy" attracts the wrong men
Men have pickers too. His picker notices things like how accommodating you are, how quickly you answer and how much you'll tolerate.
An emotionally available, emotionally intelligent man isn't looking for a woman with no needs. He's looking for a woman he can actually know.
A man who wants to be managed, rescued or endlessly understood? He'll find an over-giver fast.
So people-pleasing doesn't protect you from the wrong men. It sends them a very clear invitation.
Authenticity is the Sword
In the Picker, Shield + Sword method, the Sword is authenticity in action.
It's simple. It isn't easy:
- Saying yes when you mean yes.
- Saying no when you mean no.
- Setting boundaries.
- Acting on what you already know.
- Choosing instead of performing.
The Sword cuts through performance. When you show up as exactly who you are, the wrong men lose interest faster, and that's a good thing. It saves you months of hoping he'll change.
The right men get curious. They can finally see you.
Why empaths and over-givers struggle most
I'll be honest. This was me.
I'm an empath. I can feel what someone needs before they say it, and for a long time I used that skill to keep men comfortable. I was doing the most in relationships with men I didn't always even like. I just liked feeling chosen.
They were picking me strongly. I wasn't evaluating them strongly.
If you're empathetic, people-pleasing can feel like kindness. But kindness that erases you isn't kindness. It's a performance, and it keeps attracting people who benefit from it.

You don't need a personality overhaul. Start small.
- Pause before "no worries." Ask yourself: is it actually fine? If not, say something true: "I was looking forward to it. Can we pick a new day?"
- Let one text wait. Not as a game. Just notice what comes up when you don't answer right away. That feeling is information.
- State one preference out loud. Pick the restaurant. Pick the movie. Tiny truths build the muscle for the big ones.
- Notice when you're explaining him. If you're defending his behavior before anyone has criticized it, your gut already knows something.
- Ask the key question. Do I actually like the relationship this person is capable of giving me right now? Not the one you hope for. The one that exists.
Authenticity doesn't mean being harsh
Using your Sword doesn't mean being cold, guarded or "brutally honest." It doesn't mean "take me or leave me."
It means you stop editing yourself to be picked. You can stay warm, soft and open, just without disappearing.
This is expansion, not deletion. You keep your desire. You keep your heart. You just stop handing yourself away.
FAQ
What does authenticity mean in dating?
It means showing up as who you actually are: your real preferences, needs, boundaries and reactions. It's the opposite of performing a version of yourself you think he'll like.
How do I stop people-pleasing in a relationship?
Start with small, honest moments. Say no to one thing you don't want. State one preference. Notice when you're over-giving to keep someone close. Consistency matters more than big confrontations.
Is over-giving in a relationship a red flag?
It's a pattern worth looking at. It often means you're working to earn a place instead of choosing a partner who meets you halfway.
Can a relationship coach help with people-pleasing?
Yes. Coaching can help you spot your patterns, practice boundaries and choose differently in real life. Coaching isn't therapy. If people-pleasing is tied to deeper pain, a licensed therapist is a great partner in that work.
