If you keep asking, "Why do I attract the wrong men?", I want to offer a different question.
What does the rest of your life look like right now?
This isn't about blame. Nobody gets graded here. Think of it like comparing stats.
Every one of us has areas where we're strong and areas where we have gaps. Relationships tend to form around those gaps. Sometimes a partner fills in what's missing. Sometimes a partner takes advantage of it. Either way, the gaps shape who shows up and what you tolerate.
In my method, these five areas are called the Shield. They're what make you strong enough to stay yourself while dating.
Heart: knowing what you want
What it covers: your values, purpose, passions, your North Star.
When it's low: If you don't know what you want, someone else will decide for you. You end up in his life, on his timeline, following his plans. You may also attract men who are drifting too, and then you become their direction.
When it's strong: You know what you're building. A man either fits into that life or he doesn't. You can tell sooner.
Ask yourself: If no one were watching, what would I be building right now?
Environment: your people and surroundings
What it covers: your friends, community, social circle, who influences you and where you spend your time.
When it's low: If your life is small or isolated, the relationship becomes everything. That's a lot of pressure on one person. It also makes you easier to pull away from friends, which is a pattern that shows up a lot in controlling or toxic relationships.
When it's strong: You have people who notice when something's off. You have a full life to come home to. A man is an addition, not your whole world.
Ask yourself: Who in my life would tell me the truth about him, and am I listening?
Mind: self-belief and handling discomfort
What it covers: confidence, self-regulation, tolerating discomfort and delayed gratification.
When it's low: Anxiety starts to feel like chemistry. Hot-and-cold texting keeps you hooked. You need an answer now, so you stay with a "maybe" instead of waiting for a clear "yes." This is often where emotionally unavailable men get in.
When it's strong: You can sit with not knowing. You can be single for a while without panicking. Inconsistency reads as a red flag, not a puzzle to solve.
Ask yourself: When he goes quiet, do I get curious or do I get anxious?

Book a free strategy callBody: energy and physical health
What it covers: movement, nutrition, energy and discipline without perfection.
This one is not about your size or how you look. It's about capacity.
When it's low: When you're exhausted, you have less energy to leave, less energy to date intentionally and less energy to hold a boundary. You settle for what's already in front of you.
When it's strong: You have the energy to choose. You feel at home in your body, and that steadiness shows.
Ask yourself: Do I have the energy to walk away from something that isn't right?
Beauty: feeling attractive on your own terms
What it covers: style, self-expression, feeling attractive and feeling sexy without male attention being the goal.
When it's low: If you only feel beautiful when he's looking at you, he holds the power. Men who give attention and then withdraw it can keep you chasing that feeling.
When it's strong: You dress for you. You feel good in your skin on a Tuesday night alone. His compliments are nice, but you don't need them.
Ask yourself: When did I last feel attractive with no one watching?
What your partner may be reflecting
Look at your last relationship, or the one you're in now. Then look at your lowest area. For example:
- Low Heart often shows up with a partner who sets the direction, or one you have to carry.
- Low Environment often shows up with a relationship that swallows your whole life.
- Low Mind often shows up with inconsistent, emotionally unavailable men who feel like "chemistry."
- Low Body often shows up with staying too long because leaving feels like too much.
- Low Beauty often shows up with men whose attention you keep chasing.
These aren't rules. They're patterns worth noticing, without judgment.
You don't need a perfect Shield
The goal isn't a perfect body, routine or life. You can take days off. You can make mistakes.
The goal is a life strong enough that you can tell the truth about what you want. From there you choose from self-trust, not loneliness or panic.
A stronger Shield doesn't just repel the wrong men. It makes room for emotionally available, emotionally intelligent men, the kind who want a partner, not a project.
FAQ
Why do I keep attracting emotionally unavailable men?
Often it's because inconsistency feels familiar or exciting, and a gap in your life (usually Mind or Environment) makes it harder to walk away early. Strengthening those areas changes what feels like chemistry.
Does my partner reflect me?
Not perfectly, and not as a judgment. But the partners we attract and tolerate often line up with the areas of our life that need the most support.
How do I attract a healthy relationship?
Build a full life you won't abandon for a man. Know what you want, keep your people close, and practice tolerating discomfort. Then choose based on who he is, not how chosen he makes you feel.
